I was so excited to love this as the m1 Mac mini with 16 gb ram and 512 gb of internal storage. Best write speed on internal was 2200 mbs . Then I purchased a hd black 770 gen 4 and this quisling case installed the sn 770 plus an older 128 gb SSD .IF YOU BUY THIS DONT DO IT. 1 WHEN YOU FIRST GET YOUR M1 MAC MINI and are doing the setup do it with nothing plugged in. When the setup is finished go to finder click on your enclosed c drive , right click information go to the bottom and unlock the page. Make sure you are in permissions as owner or main owner. Unless you’ll have other users get rid of the other ones in there like wheel etc. you might have system that’s ok. But make sure you as the user is in there with your new computer password. I always use a 4 fidget password I live alone and in not worried about my chihuahua getting in there. If you don’t you may end up like me> I did my seruo following the on screen instructions. Then I PLUGGED THIS STUPID QUIZLING OR WUIZLAB DOCK IN WITH MY 2 DRIVES. A MESSAGE SAID ONE OF MY DRIVES NEEDED INITIATING. I CLICKED OK, SNAP IT TOOK A HALF NANO SECOND THE M1 MAC MINI IS SUPER FAST. BUT NOW I HAVE A 512 GB INTERNAL NVME C DRIVE THAT IS UNWRITABLE. I tried reinstalling the os, no luck. So my next step is going to be completely wipe the drive. Fortunately I haven’t loaded it up yet as I’ve been waiting to see what I can do with an exterior drive 512 is not enough for me. That was number 1 Number 2 pissed me off. They make this to completely work with any Mac mini. But if you want to advantage speed of 40 gbs this ain’t the one. This model and all the other models that look similar to this are all the same 10ths don’t forget that gets divided up.My WD black sn 770 is supposed to get near 7000 gbs. I was barely getting the same as an SSD 3 of 600 gbs. For what these drives cost to only get just above the 10 year old tech is rediculous.WATCH THE EXTERIOR DOCKS YOU PURCHASE. IF IT DOESNT SAY GEN 3 USB C 4 ( 40 gbs) if you don’t see that then you’ll only get 10 or even 5Sadly the usb C 4 and thunderbolt 3 are the same thing 40 gbs. Plus did some research. The hd black sn 770 reviewed by Tom’s hardware is the best for the buck. Look for his article. I wanted to return my 1tb that I paid 104 for and buy a 2 tb sn770 for 229. It beats crutiaks best and so on, but there is a professional grade western hd black sn 850. That smokes it’s little brother th sn 770 but the 850 runs easily 100 dollars or more over the 770. Except I went hunting and found one left hd black 880 2tb for 235 on eBay, just 15 bucks more than the 770 so I snapped it up. It’s new in original package . Anyway stay away from this quiz lab or quizling (WW II) back stabler!Omg just read this with glasses. I’m sorry about all the spelling issues. I’m not going to re write this. I just want to say there is this quiz lab and maybe 4 other ones just like it. Enticing that it is the same shape as the m1 Mac mini or even the Mac studio. Now all the ports seem to work ok BUT THIS UNIT IS NOT THUNDERBOLT ANYTHING 1,2,3, OR 4. SO WITH THE WD SN 770 OR 850 NVME GEN 4 DRIVES IM SUPPOSED TO GET UP TO 7000 MBS (I wrote gbs above sorry) anyway top speed from the internal 512 gb nvme that came with the m1 Mac mini is close to 3000 mbs, I plugged this quizling into the usbc on the back of the Mac mini which is tb3. The best speeds with the gen4 WD black were around 600 to 700 max no where near the 7000 it possibly can get in the right conditions. I purchased a tb3 nvme enclosure also purchased a specific tb 4 usbc cable, this crap has got confusing. Plugged it into the same port with the same storage and got close to 2900/3000 mbs. I’m satisfied with that. I set it us as my main boot drive I ended up buying the WD black sn850 for 239.00 on eBay just 20 bucks more than the 770 would be but the 850 although a year older model is better has better quality 3d chips and better controllers. I plan on butting the next gen Mac mini when the m2 comes out and selling my m1. I won’t have to while my drive I’ll just move the 2tb nvme to the new m2 Mac mini I am not using the 512 gb of storage on the Apple. It’s sooooo expensive just for the 1tb for the 2tb it’s 800 more. Where I paid 235 more. Apple sucks in just one way they over charge for everything. It’s like a monopoly , you get hooked into the apple ecosystem I’ve got the iPhone 13 pro max the latest apple tvx3 Apple Watch 7, plus a few other apples and they get you because when they are all connected to iCloud there all connected. You feel like your in control or something. Before my Apple Watch several times I left my apple iPad Pro at my parents house. Now when ever I drive away from home my watch tells me everything I’ve left behind. I can turn it off but I kinda like it. I was going to get some of those apple ? Pads or what ever. You put one in your wallet one on your keys, one on your chihuahua if you like . But what ever has one is never lost to you. But there super expensive. See they got me. I’m retired on a fixed income. My complaint about the new m1 Mac mini is nothing is upgradable. So you have to decid how you are going to want your machine configured.. nobody should buy the 8gb m1 Mac mini. I wish the options were 16gb or 32gb. But they’re 8 and 16. I got the 16, I ended up getting the 512 storage which I think now was a waste of money. Instead buy a tb 3 or 4 enclosure plus the best and biggest nvme gen 4 storage SSD you can buy then for the next 10 years you should just be able to drag Tory storage along if you get a new computer. From now on unless I win a lottery I’m getting the most memory and I don’t even care if it has an onboard drive because I won’t use it. Like I’m not using it now. I suppose if the m1 computer needs more than 16 gb of ram the internal storage is fast enough for the ram to use the storage which it does, to temporary keep things going. I tried running a bunch of apps at once including logic prox Anna Google Crome and never a hiccup. The only reason for this review is if you buy this to put your supper fast nvme drive in you’re wasting your money. The tb3 enclosure I bought cost me 123 bucks and it’s a nice aluminum tool less case totally quiet but I consistently get right speeds. I think those companies that sell those Mac mini shaped nvme enclosures tell you in fine print it can give you shared 10 mbs , forget about it, if you don’t see 40 gbs don’t buy it. If it doesn’t say tb3 or 4 don’t buy it. Good dayFirst off if your buying this hub to attach an SSD, make sure you format it to use with MacOS (APFS if your on MacOS 10.13 an above). If it is formatted in NTFS that is Windows format and on a Mac you will only be able to read content and you will not be able to write files to it, if you made this mistake and do not wish to reformat then there is a solution such as NTFS for Mac by Paragon! Also it is recommended to use a separate power source rather than plugging it into the Mac Mini for power, i have mine hooked up to a USB port on my power strip and i have no issues with power delivery on all ports while simultaneously having an m.2 and an SSD hooked up to the dock. All in all i really enjoy this product, but there are a few things that have me disappointed, the product is mostly plastic and feels very lightweight, there is hardly any aluminum. There is no cooling support for the m.2 i have a heatsink for mine and it does not fit inside the dock therefore i cannot recommend this for gen 4 m.2 drives as they do run a lot hotter than gen 3. The price is a bit ridiculous at $100 i would recommend waiting till it's on sale, i got mine $65 on prime day and still feel like i overpayed.t's a must-buy to compensate for the M1 Mac Mini's lack of adequate I/O. The SD/microSD ports are welcome. Even better are the options for mounting an NVMe and 2.5" SSD inside for extra storage, though the connectors don't feel very secure. My biggest gripe would be how it never stays put. I had to print a mount to hold it on top of my Mini and keep it from slipping around.I purchased this for my mac mini and now it works great with the studio max too. Put a fast ssd drive or two in and you have fast reliable data backup. No problems in a year of use.Set it up with with connectors USB-C to Mac mini for data and USB-A for Power. Ports worked. Decided to go back to BestBuy to try out a M2 NVE 1TB. Had trouble inserting into the slot. I think the trick is to insert it at an angle and then bend it downward, locking it in place with the provided rubber nubby. After turning everything back on I formatted it as APFS and ran Black Magic. Almost 600 mb/s - 6 times the speed of the G-Drive I bought. SD card worked fine also. Very happy with this purchase.Build quality is nice. The color, as many have mentioned, is close but not a perfect match... it's fine. It's pretty much plug and play, so no setup to speak of.I added a 1TB HDD and a 960GB NVME M.2. As soon as I started moving data to the M.2 I started getting disconnects. The HDD would never disconnect... only the M.2 drive. After a bit of troubleshooting I removed the cover and measured the temp of my M.2 with an infrared thermometer and realized it was reaching ~155F during transfers. Per the specs the operating temp is good up to 158F so I thought this might be the issue. I placed a small fan blowing straight onto the M.2 and tried again and it went several days with no disconnects doing nightly Time Machine Backups. I stress tested it moving 40GB folders to the M.2 repeatedly and I could not make it disconnect.I ordered the following heat sink. There is no room for anything thicker.... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0995XXMTC?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1After installing the heat sink I repeated my stress test and got no disconnects. I replaced the cover and have been using it for a week now with no disconnects, so I think the problem is resolved.I can't really blame Qwiizlab for this problem... it may be that this M.2 is just a little too sensitive on the upper temp range, or something is wrong with the internal throttling. As far as I know, these are suppose to throttle down to keep from overheating. My M.2: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093QL29RZ?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1Otherwise this is a great enclosure.Ok, where to begin? I received the item with no delays. Upon receiving the USB C Hub with SSD Enclosure and taking the item out of the box I noticed a small chip on the surface, which is not noticeable until you bring the product closer to you, as shown in the second picture, it wasn't a big deal to me.Now with this device, only whether it is a complaint or an issue that I have, is the SSD, and the NVME is not recognized in their actual brand of storage name, but rather the controllers on the device. Eg: I own a Samsung 960 pro-NVME.2 and when installed in the USB C Hub, the SSD gets recognized by a different name on the controller of the Hub, if a new firmware is available for the SSD and you need to update the firmware with the Samsung software, it won't find it, and this is a problem. And if you are thinking of using the USB-c hub as your main OS to work in instead of the Mac mini, it will not work, all you will have is trouble, and I Believe this is not Qwiizlabe Hub's fault.I do hope that the brand of this Hub will continue to support newer firmware as it will be available in the future. In general, it is good to have extra storage and ports for the mac mini, either for the time machine or for you simply drag and drop files.I hope I have reviewed the USB C Hub honestly and given the stars for what it deserves and given you the info on what to know before you buy.The box is better than another vendor I had tried. The cable appears to be also better. The cover was difficult to remove, I was very afraid to break it when I removed it. I was lucky it did not break. It is very tight. The disk fit fine, I am yet to purchase a printed circuit board as a disk drive. I will see then how it is to install. So far so good. The only thing is that it has a hard time seeing the Logitech mouse/keyboard unifying dungle… at startup it does see it all the time. I was force to put it on the Mac Mini M1 and move a USB device on it. I will see how it performs, too soon to tell now… but overall much better than the other vendorgreat product but even with a 3amp power supply to power the unit the ssd drive has great read speeds but the write speeds are not very good for using internal so iam woundering if the power is more ment for the nvme drive that can also be installed other wise it works great for the rest of what it has for features .. so all in all pretty decent for the moneyI have a very specific, very niche gripe with this product.Because the Mac Mini that I use it with is so quiet, there is almost no noise at all around me...Except....except for the sound of the mechanical drive in this unit. It's high pitched and very quiet, but for me, it is so pervasive. It drives me bonkers. But otherwise it's great. Would recommend. With ports on both sides of unit, there still ends up cables everywhere. And there is no way to keep the Mini on top centre, so it slides around on this. A rubber ring on top of this would be perfect to nestle the Mac Mini like other makes have. Otherwise this unit has all the internal and external connections needed, which is really nice. The back 5v USB-C port seems to only be a power port - can't connect anything to it. So that was a bad choice.
